Find Yourself

Who are we? That is the first question. It’s a question that’s almost impossible to answer.

But we all agree that one’s busy or daily self is not quite one’s real self. We’re quite sure that we’ve lost something in the course of just making our living.。

A crowd is watching a person running about looking for something in a field, and a wise man asks, “What has that person lost?” Someone may guess a watch, another a diamond ring. When everyone has guessed, the wise man who like everyone else there has no idea, says, “I’ll tell you one thing for sure. He’s lost some breath.”

And no one can deny that he’s right. The point is that we often forget our true selves in pursuit of things that are external1 to us, like a bird forgetting its own danger in pursuit of a mantis, which in turn forgets its own danger in pursuit of some other prey.

Just Quit

Quit making excuses! Making excuses or blaming others for any situation in your life is nothing more than playing the victim.

Take responsibility! Make your life decisions, and if you don’t, then it’s your fault. You are a spiritual being in a physical body, and your spirit should run your life. Take it back! Make today the day you quit playing the victim by making excuses and blaming others for what hens to you.

Quit procrastinating! Cancer is not the most deadly killer; procrastination is. It kills dreams. It kills your future. Never use the phrase “I’ll try”. There is no such thing as trying. Pay attention when others use this phrase: ninety-nine percent of the time they do nothing. The words are just an easy way to fort oneself.

Quit thinking self-defeating thoughts! Quit thinking that you can’t do what you want to do. It’s not what you are that’s holding you back; it’s what you think you are. You were given all the equipment you need to acplish anything you desire. Use that power today.

As for bad habits: just quit! Take the challenge. Pick one, and quit it this week. Next week pick another, and so on. Improve your life by being a “quitter” now.

What is your most ideal day? Do you know exactly how you want to live your life for the next five days, five weeks, five months or five years? When was the last best day of your life? When is the next?

The best day of our lives is today. The past is no longer here. We cannot enjoy it any longer. To dwell on the past is to waste the opportunity to enjoy the present. The future is a promise, a time that will not e because what we he is only today. When tomorrow es, it will not be tomorrow any more; it bees your today. You cannot enjoy tomorrow unless you know how to enjoy your today. If you are to live thirty more years, you are going to experience 10,950 todays. But every day that passes without your notice is a day cut off from your life. Your life is a day shorter every new day.

Each day is a decision to live. Today is a gift; this is why it is called the "present". How you use this day is up to you. At each new day, you decide whether to unwrap that gift, or let it stay in the corner and spoil. Each day is a decision to live your ideal life.

It is physically impossible for a well-educated intellectual, or bre man to make money the chief object① of his thoughts; as physically impossible as it is for him to make his dinner the principal object of them.

All healthy people like their dinner, but their dinner is not the mainobject of their lives. So all healthy-minded people like making money--ought to like it and to enjoy the sensation② of winning; but the main object of their lives is not money; it is something better than money.

A good soldier, for instance③, mainly wishes to do his fighting well. He is glad of his pay--very properly so --and justly grumbles④ when you keep him ten months without it; still, his main notion⑤ of life is to win battles, not to be paid for winning them.

So too of doctors. They like fees no dou--ought to like them; yet the entire object of their lives is not fees. They, on the whole desire to cure the sick, would rather cure their patients and lose their fee than kill them and get it. And so with all other bre and rightly trained men: their work is first, their fee is second, very important always, but still second.

But in every nation, there is a vast class of people who are cowardly⑥, and more or less stupid. And with these people, just as certainly the fee is first and the work second, as with bre people the work is first and the fee second.

And this is no small distinction⑦. It is the whole distinction in a man. You cannot serve two masters; you must serve one or the other. If your work is first with you, and your fee is second, work is your master.

Observe, then, all wise work is mainly threefold⑧ in character. It is honest, useful, and cheerful. I hardly know anything more strange than that you recognize honesty in play, and do not in work.

In your lightest games you he always someone to see what you call "fair play". In boxing you must hit fair; in racing, start fair. Your watchword is fair play; your hatred, foul play. Did it ever strike you that you wanted another watchword⑨ also, fair work, and another hatred also, foul⑩ work?

 Mother & Child

It was Christmas 1961. I was teaching in a small town in Ohio where my twenty-seven third graders eagerly anticipated the great day of gifts giving.

A tree covered with tinsel and gaudy paper chains graced one corner. In another rested a manger scene produced from cardboard and poster paints by chubby, and sometimes grubby, hands. Someone had brought a doll and placed it on the straw in the cardboard box that served as the manger. It didn't matter that you could pull a string and hear the blue-eyed, golden-haired dolly say, "My name is Susie." "But Jesus was a boy baby!" one of the boys proclaimed. Nonetheless, Susie stayed.

Each day the children produced some new wonder -- strings of popcorn, hand-made trinkets, and German bells made from wallpaper samples, which we hung from the ceiling. Through it all she remained aloof, watching from afar, seemingly miles away. I wondered what would hen to this quiet child, once so hy, now so suddenly withdrawn. I hoped the festivities would eal to her. But nothing did. We made cards and gifts for mothers and dads, for sisters and brothers, for grandparents, and for each other. At home the students made the popular fried marbles and vied with one another to bring in the prettiest ones. " You put them in a hot frying pan, Teacher. And you let them get real hot, and then you watch what hens inside. But you don't fry them too long or they break."So, as my gift to them, I made each of my students a little pouch for carrying their fried marbles. And I knew they had each made something for me: bookmarks carefully cut, colored, and sometimes pasted together; cards and special drawings; liquid embroidery doilies, hand-fringed, of course.

The day of gift-giving finally came. We oohed and aahed over our handiwork as the presents were exchanged. Through it all, she sat quietly watching. I had made a special pouch for her, red and green with white lace. I wanted very much to see her smile. She opened the package so slowly and carefully. I waited but she turned away. I had not penetrated the wall of isolation she had built around herself.

After school the children left in little groups, chattering about the great day yet to come when long-hoped-for two-wheelers and bright sleds would ear beside their trees at home. She lingered, watching them bundle up and go out the door. I sat down in a child-sized chair to catch my breath, hardly aware of what was hening, when she came to me with outstretched hands, bearing a small white box, unwred and slightly soiled, as though it had been held many times by unwashed, childish hands. She said nothing. "For me?" I asked with a weak smile. She said not a word, but nodded her head. I took the box and gingerly opened it. There inside, glistening green, a fried marble hung from a golden chain. Then I looked into that elderly eight-year-old face and saw the question in her dark brown eyes. In a flash I knew -- she had made it for her mother, a mother she would never see again, a mother who would never hold her or brush her hair or share a funny story, a mother who would never again hear her childish joys or sorrows. A mother who had taken her own life just three weeks before.

I held out the chain. She took it in both her hands, reached forward, and secured the simple clasp at the back of my neck. She stepped back then as if to see that all was well. I looked down at the shiny piece of glass and the tarnished golden chain, then back at the giver. I meant it when I whispered," Oh, Maria, it is so beautiful. She would he loved it."Neither of us could stop the tears. She stumbled into my arms and we wept together. And for that brief moment I became her mother, for she had given me the greatest gift of all: herself.

By Patricia A. Habada

 FAMILY

 FAMILY= (F)ATHER (A)ND (M)OTHER, (I) (L)OVE (Y)OU

A man came home from work late, tired and irritated, to find his 5-year old son waiting for him at the door.

Daddy, may I ask you a question?

Yeah sure, what is it? replied the man.

Daddy, how much do you make an hour?

That's none of your business. Why do you ask such a thing? the man said angrily. I just want to know. Please tell me, how much do you make an hour?

 pleaded the little boy.

If you must know, I make $20 an hour.

Oh, the little boy replied, with his head down. Looking up, he said, Daddy, may I please borrow $10?

The father was furious, If the only reason you asked that is so you can borrow some money to buy a silly toy or some other nonsense, then you march yourself straight to your room and go to bed. Think about why you are being so selfish. I work hard everyday for such this childish behior.

The little boy quietly went to his room and shut the door. The man sat down and started to get even angrier about the little boy's questions. How dare he ask such questions only to get some money? After about an hour or so, the man had calmed down, and started to think: Maybe there was something he really needed to buy with that $10 and he really didn't ask for money very often.

The man went to the door of the little boy's room and opened the door.

Are you asleep, son? He asked.

No daddy, I'm awake, replied the boy.

I've been thinking, maybe I was too hard on you earlier, said the man, It's been a long day and I took out my aggration on you. Here's the $10you asked for.

The little boy sat straight up, smiling. Oh, thank you daddy! He yelled. Then, reaching under his pillow he pulled out some crumpled up bills. The man, seeing that the boy already had money, started to get angry again. The little boy slowly counted out his money, then looked up at his father.

Why do you want more money if you already he some? the father grumbled.

Because I didn't he enough, but now I do, the little boy replied. Daddy, I he $20 now. Can I buy an hour of your time? Please come home early tomorrow. I would like to he dinner with you.

Life is full of miracles. They surround us every day. One of these miracles hened to me recently. I was filling my car?s tank at a local gas station. It was only 10 A.M. but I already felt tired. It was a cloudy, gloomy and rainy day and I hadn?t slept well the night before. After I paid for the gas I turned my car towards the main road. I looked right and left then my brain sent the signal for my foot to push on the gas pedal but nothing hened. Shocked, I shook my head to clear it and gazed down at my foot.

Just as I did, though, a semi-truck roared past my car doing 60 mph. My weary, bleary eyes hadn?t seen it when I had looked just 2 seconds earlier. If I had been pulling out when I should he been my little green car would he been smashed and I would he most likely been killed. I sat there for a long time quietly thanking God for sparing my life before pulling out on the road and heading home. This time both my brain and foot worked perfectly.

As I looked back on that moment later I still couldn?t understand it. Did God prevent my brain?s signal from reaching my foot? Did an angel grab my toes to keep them from pressing on the gas? One question kept coming back into my mind as well: why? Why did I get this miracle? Why did God spare my life this day? Finally, I felt the answer forming deep within my heart and mind. I heard the words coming from my soul saying: ?You still he more to do. Your work is not done yet!?

Richard Bach wrote: ?Here is the test to find if your mission on Earth is finished: if you are alive it isn?t.? Wake up each day then knowing that your mission isn?t done yet. You he more love to share, more people to help, more kindness to give. You he one more day to be the miracle God meant for you to be.

 The Coffee Place

I used to believe courtesy was a thing of the past. Very seldom he I encountered a courteous human being in this modern era of the so called Generation X.

Recently, I had to change my thinking, when I came face to face with just such a human being. I had gone to a hening coffee place, with two of my grown up daughters. The place was crowded with the usual loud crowd and we had to climb a steep flight of stairs in order to find an empty table. After enjoying coffee and snacks, we were at the steep descent down the stairs, where the narrow space made climbing down only possible in a single file, with hardly any space for another person to either climb up or come down.

Just as I was in the middle of my descent, a gentleman entered the main entrance of the restaurant which was right in front of the staircase. I was sure I would be pushed roughly by this man who will want to go up in a hurry. I kept coming down as fast as I could, holding on to the bannister, in lieu of my advanced years. My agile daughters were already down, looking up at me worriedly, hoping I would reach them before the stranger started up the stairs, knowing I was a nervous sort.

Nearly reaching them, I noticed the man still standing near the door. I reached my daughters and passed the stranger at the entrance door which he kept holding open. I looked back thinking he was still at the door, deciding whether to go in or find another less crowded place. I saw him going up the stairs, two at a time. I told my daughters about it and all three of us felt bad that we did not even thank the courteous gentleman who was actually holding the door open for us ladies to pass through before going up.

We lauded his chivalry for both, waiting for us to come down before going up himself and also holding the main entrance door open for us to go out. Such well mannered people are hard to find these days, when shoving, jostling and pushing is very common in our advanced but aggressive society. Till date, I remember this gentleman and pray to God to make more human beings like him.

As a recent Stroke Survivor and Author of You Will See God?s Miracles If Only You Believe (ailable for purchase on Amazon), I am here to share some crucial life-lessons I learned in recent years concerning well-balanced lifestyles, how to divert personal disasters, and the art of listening to what your body and mind is trying to tell you.

As an executive, my plate was filled to overflowing. I basically worked from sun up to sun down, so to speak.

Prior to my stroke, I thrived in my role as CEO of a successful chamber of commerce.

To balance the stress, I would work out at the gym a minimum of two hours a day, seven days a week. There were even days, when I would go to the gym twice in one day. What I did not realize, was that stress in my work life and excessive workout regimen was taking a toll on my health.

Friday December 20, 2013 will be forever etched in my memory. That fateful morning, I was exhausted, and my spirit told me to stay home and get some much-needed rest, but I didn?t listen. Driven by my ambition, I jumped out of bed and drove to the gym for a vigorous work-out.

As a result, I suffered a severe hemorrhaging stroke induced by a rigorous work load and around-the-clock schedule. During my time in the hospital, the neurologist told me something very startling,? It was your drive that got you in here, and your drive will get you out.? Then, he said something that stunned me. I asked him if I had stayed in bed that morning, would I he had the stroke? He said a resounding? No.?

My message is simple, but powerful?

 Take nothing for granted!

DARE! To believe God for miracles!

 And face adversity?with an attitude!

Greta always said, "dear, keep walking in sunshine!" no matter how terrible my day started, ialways felt sunny walking home from greta?s house-even beneath the winter starlight.

I arrived at greta?s house today just after sunset. an ambulance had stopped a few feet fromher door, it?s red lights flashing. when i ran into the old house, greta recognized me right away.

She smiled at me with her unforgettable twinkling blue eyes. she was almost out of breath whenshe reached out and softly touched my arm. her last words to me were "dear, keep walking insunshine!"

How strange is the lot of us mortals! Each of us is here for a brief sojourn; for what purpose heknows not, though he sometimes thinks he senses it. But without deeper reflection one knowsfrom daily life that one exists for other people?first of all for those upon whose smiles and well-being our own hiness is wholly dependent, and then for the many, unknown to us, towhose destinies we are bound by the ties of sympathy. A hundred times every day I remindmyself that my inner and outer life are based on the labors of other men, living and dead, andthat I must exert myself in order to give in the same measure as I he received and am stillreceiving. I am strongly drawn to a frugal life and am often oppressively aware that I amengrossing an undue amount of the labor of my fellowmen. I regard class distinctions asunjustified and, in the last resort, based on force. I also believe that a simple andunassuming life is good for everybody, physically and mentally.

I do not at all believe in human freedom in the philosophical sense. Everybody acts not onlyunder external compulsion but also in accordance with inner necessity. Schopenhauer?ssaying, ?A man can do what he wants, but not want what he wants,? has been a very realinspiration to me since my youth; it has been a continual consolation in the face of life?shardships, my own and others?, and an unfailing wellspring of tolerance. This realizationmercifully mitigates the easily paralyzing sense of responsibility and prevents us from takingourselves and other people all too seriously; it is conducive to a view of life which, inparticular, gives humor its due.

To inquire after the meaning or object of one?s own existence or that of all creatures hasalways seemed to me absurd from an objective point of view. And yet everybody has certainideals which determine the direction of his endeors and his judgments. In this sense I henever looked upon ease and hiness as ends in themselves?this ethical basis I call the idealof a pigsty. The ideals which he lighted my way, and time after time he given me newcourage to face life cheerfully, he been Kindness, Beauty, and Truth. Without the sense ofkinship with men of like mind, without the occupation with the objective world, the eternallyunattainable in the field of art and scientific endeors, life would he seemed to me empty. The trite objects of human efforts?possessions, outward success, luxury?he alwaysseemed to me contemptible.

My passionate sense of social justice and social responsibility has always contrasted oddlywith my pronounced lack of need for direct contact with other human beings and humancommunities. I am truly a ?lone treler? and he never belonged to my country, my home, myfriend, or even my immediate family, with my whole heart; in the face of all these ties, I henever lost a sense of distance and a need for solitude-feelings which increase with the years. One becomes sharply aware, but without regret, of the limits of mutual understanding andconsonance with other people. No dou, such a person loses some of his innocence andunconcern; on the other hand, he is largely independent, of the opinions, habits, andjudgments of his fellows and oids the temptation to build his inner equilibrium upon suchinsecure foundations.

The most beautiful experience we can he is the mysterious. It is the fundamental emotionwhich stands at the cradle of true art and true science. Whoever does not know it and can nolonger wonder, no longer marvel, is as good as dead, and his eyes are dimmed. It was theexperience of mystery?even if mixed with fear?that engendered religion. A knowledge of theexistence of something we cannot penetrate, our perceptions of the profoundest reason andthe most radiant beauty, which only in their most primitive forms are accessible to our minds?it is this knowledge and this emotion that constitute true religiosity; in this sense, and in thisalone, I am a deeply religious man. I cannot conceive of a God who rewards and punishes hiscreatures, or has a will of the kind that we experience in ourselves. Neither can I nor would Iwant to conceive of an individual that survives his physical death; let feeble souls, from fear orabsurd egoism, cherish such thoughts. I am satisfied with the mystery of the eternity of lifeand with the awareness and a glimpse of the marvelous structure of the existing world, together with the devoted striving to comprehend a portion, be it ever so tiny, of theReason that manifests itself in nature.

Self-control is essential to hiness and usefulness. It is the master of all the virtues, andhas its root in self-respect. Let a man yield to his impulses and passions, and from thatmoment he gives up his moral freedom.

It is the self-discipline of a man that enables him to pursue success with superior diligenceand sobriety. Many of the great characters in history illustrate this trait. In ordinary life thelication is the same.He who would lead must first command himself. The time of test iswhen everybody is excited or angry, then the well-balanced mind comes to the front.

There is a very special demand for the cultivation of his trait at present. The young men whorush into business with no good education or drill will do poor and feverish work.Endurance is amuch better test of character than act of heroism.

A fair amount of self-examination is good. Self-knowledge is a preface to self-control. Toomuch self-inspection leads to morbidness; too little conducts to careless and hasty action. There are two things which will surely strengthen our self-control. One is attention toconscience; the other is a spirit of good will. The man who would succeed in any greatundertaking must hold all his faculties under perfect control; they must be disciplined anddrilled until they quickly and cheerfully obey the will.

In the future days, which we seek to make secure,we look forward to a world founded uponfour essential human freedoms.

The first is freedom of speech and expression - everywhere in the world.

The second is freedom of every person to worship God in his own way - everywhere in theworld.

The third is freedom from want - which, translated into world terms, means economicunderstandings which will secure to every nation a healthy peace time life for its inhabitants -everywhere in the world.

The fourth is freedom from fear - which, translated into world terms, means a world widereduction of armaments to such a point and in such a thorough fashion that no nation will bein a position to commit an actof physical aggression against any neighbor - anywhere in theworld.

That is no vision of a distant millennium. It is a definite basis for a kind of world attainable inour own time and generation. That kind of world is the very antithesis of the so called neworder of tyranny which the dictators seek to create with the crash of a bomb.

To that new order we oppose the greater conception - the moral order. A good society is ableto face schemes of world domination and foreign revolutions alike without fear.

Since the beginning of our American history we he been engaged in change - in a perpetualpeaceful revolution - a revolution which goes on steadily, quietly adjusting itself to changingconditions - without theconcentration camp or the quicklime in the ditch. The world order whichwe seek is the cooperation of freecountries, working together in a friendly civilized society.

This nation has placed its destiny in the hands and heads and hearts of its millions of free menand women;and its faith in freedom under the guidance of God. Freedom means thesupremacy of human rights everywhere. Our support goes to those who struggle to gainthose rights and keep them. Our strength is in our unityof purpose.

To that high concept there can be no end se victory.

While popular in the U.S., the April Fool?s Day tradition is even more prevalent in Europeancountries, such as France and Great Britain. Although the roots of the traditional trickings areunclear, the French andthe British both he claims on the origin of the celebration.

One theory holds that the first April Fool?s Day was on April 1 of the year when King of Franceinstituted the new calendar. This new system placed the day that had formerly been the firstday of a new year on April 1.Many people were reluctant to adjust to the new calandar andcontinued to celebrate New Year?s Day on what had become the first day of April. Thus, theybecome the first April fools.Others began to give gaggifts on the day to mock the foolishnessof thosewho continued to celebrate the new year on April 1.

An English story about the day, however, holds that it began sometime during the 1200s.Atthe time, King John of England was in the habit of making a road out of nearly every path hewalked regularly. The citizensof one particular farm village were aware of this.To oid hingtheir green meadows and pastures disturbed with one of the king?s roads, they built a fencethat prevented the king from walking through their countryside. The king sent a group ofmessengers to inform the villagers that they must remove the barrier.Upon hearing that theking was planning to do this, however, the villagers developed a plan of their own.Whenthemessengers arrived, they found what eared to be a community of lunatics, with peoplebehing in a bizarre manner, throwing things and running around wildly. The messengers, alarmed at what they had found, reported to king John that these people were so mad as tobe beyond punishment. So, the villagers sed their farmland by tricking the King. In GreatBritain, tradition only allows April Fool?s tricks from midnightto noon on April 1. Those who try toplay tricks in the afternoon become the fools themselves.

 Watch the world go by

I was sitting outside my new home yesterday (we just moved last week, and we love the new place), watching the world go by.

There were people in cars, in a hurry to get to their next ointment. There were birds flying by, insects just as busy as the people in cars, plants and weeds thriving in the humid(潮湿的) Guam climate.

Inside the house, my children were also busy, as ever, making a mess of the house (which my wife and I would soon clean up), getting into things, their natural curiosity overpowering our previous pleas for them not to play with lotion(洗液,洗涤剂) or take things apart.

The sky was slightly overcast and there was a cool breeze, quite strong and pleasant actually.

It's not often that most of us just sit quietly, and allow the world to pass us by.

 Why not?

What is so important that it can't wait until later? What email must be answered right this moment? Do we really need to read all those articles online, all those messages from others, all those newspapers and magazines? Do we need to he the television and radio and Internet on all the time?

Is life passing us by as we keep our minds super-busy? Are we missing out on the beautiful world around us as we constantly think about the future - what we need to do, our anxieties about what might hen - and the past - what we did wrong, what someone else did to us, what we said, what should he hened?

When was the last time you just sat, and observed? Why not do it today?

When he told me he was leing I felt like a vase which has just smashed. There were pieces of me all over the tidy, tan(棕褐色) tiles. He kept talking, telling me why he was leing, explaining it was for the best, I could do better, it was his fault and not mine. I had heard it before many times and yet somehow was still not immune; perhaps one did not become immune to such felony(重罪).

He left and I tried to get on with my life. I filled the kettle and put it on to boil, I took out my old red mug and filled it with coffee watching as each coffee granule(颗粒) slipped in to the bone china. That was what my life had been like, endless omissions of coffee granules, somehow never managing to make that cup of coffee.

Somehow when the kettle piped its finishing warning I pretended not to hear it. That's what Mike's leing had been like, sudden and with an awful finality. I would rather just wallow in uncertainty than he things finished. I laughed at myself. Imagine getting all philosophical and sentimental about a mug of coffee. I must be getting old.

And yet it was a young woman who stared back at me from the mirror. A young woman full of promise and hope, a young woman with bright eyes and full lips just waiting to take on the world. I never loved Mike anyway. Besides there are more important things. More important than love, I insist to myself firmly. The lid goes back on the coffee just like closure on the whole Mike experience.

He doesn't haunt my dreams as I feared that night. Instead I am flying far across fields and woods, looking down on those below me. Suddenly I fall to the ground and it is only when I wake up that I realize I was shot by a hunter, brought down by the burden of not the bullet but the soul of the man who shot it. I realize later, with some degree of understanding, that Mike was the hunter holding me down and I am the bird that longs to fly. The next night my dream is similar to the previous nights, but without the hunter. I fly free until I meet another bird who flies with me in perfect harmony. I realize with some relief that there is a bird out there for me, there is another person, not necessarily a lover perhaps just a friend, but there is someone out there who is my soul mate. I think about being a broken vase again and realize that I he glued myself back together, what Mike has is merely a little part of my time in earth, a little understanding of my physical being. He has only, a little piece of me.

A passenger told an air hostess that he needed a cup of water to take his medicine when the plane just took off. She told him that she would bring him the water in ten minutes.

Thirty minutes later, when the passenger's ring for service sounded, the air hostess flew in a flurry. She was kept so busy that she forgot to deliver him the water. As a result, the passenger was held up to take his medicine. She hurried over to him with a cup of water, but he refused it.

In the following hours on the flight, each time the stewardess passed be the passenger she would ask him with a smile whether he needed help or not. But the passenger never paid heed to(注意) her.

When he was going to get off the plane, the passenger asked the stewardess to hand him the passengers' booklet. She was very sad. She knew that he would write down sharp words, but with a smile she handed it to him.

Off the plane, she opened the booklet, and cracked a smile(展颜微笑), for the passenger put it, "On the flight, you asked me whether I need help or not for twelve times in all. How can I refuse your twelve sincere smiles?"

That's right! Who can refuse your twelve sincere smiles from a person?
