Youth

Youth is not a time of life; it is a state of mind; it is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees; it is a matter of the will, a quality of the imagination, a vigor of the emotions; it is the freshness of the deep springs of life.

Youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over timidity, of the etite for adventure over the love of ease. This often exists in a man of 60 more than a boy of 20. Nobody grows old merely by a number of years. We grow old by deserting our ideals.

Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul. Worry, fear, self-distrust bows the heart and turns the spirit back to dust.

Whether 60 or 16, there is in every human being’s heart the lure of wonders, the unfailing etite for what’s next and the joy of the game of living. In the center of your heart and my heart, there is a wireless station; so long as it receives messages of beauty, hope, courage and power from man and from the infinite, so long as you are young.

When your aerials are down, and your spirit is covered with snows of cynicism and the ice of pessimism, then you’ve grown old, even at 20; but as long as your aerials are up, to catch wes of optimism, there’s hope you may die young at 80.

On Going a Journey

One of the pleasantest things in the world is going a journey: but I like to go by myself. I can enjoy society in a room; but out of doors, nature is pany enough for me. I am then never less alone than when alone. "The fields his study, nature was his book."

I cannot see the wit of walking and talking at the same time. When I am in the country I wish to vegetate like the country. I am not for criticizing hedges and black cattle. I go out for town in order to forget the town and all that is in it. There are those who for this purpose go to watering places, and carry the metropolis with them.

I like more space and fewer obstacles. I like solitude, when I give myself up to it, for the sake of solitude; nor do I ask for "a friend in my retreat, whom I may whisper solitude is sweet." The soul of journey is liberty, perfect liberty, to think, feel, do, just as one pleases.

We go a journey chiefly to be free of all obstacles and all inconveniences; to lee ourselves behind, much more to get rid of others. It is because I want a little breathing space to ponder on indifferent matters, where contemplation "May plume her feathers and let grow her wings, that in the various bustle of resort were all too ruffled, and sometimes impaired."

I absent myself from the town for a while, without feeling at a loss the moment I am left by myself. Instead of a friend in a post chaise or in a carriage, to exchange good things with, and vary the same stale topics over again, for once let me he a time free from manners.

Give me the clear blue sky over my head, and the green turf beneath my feet, a winding road before me, and the three hours' march to dinner — and then to thinking! It is hard if I cannot start some game on these lone heaths.

I laugh, I run, I leap, I sing for joy! From the point of yonder rolling cloud I plunge into my past being, and revel there as the sun-burnt Indian plunges headlong into the we that wafts him to his native shore. Then long-forgotten things like "sunken wrack and sumless treasuries", burst upon my eager sight, and I begin to feel, think, and be myself again. Instead of an awkward silence, broken by attempts at wit or dull monplaces, mine is that undisturbed silence of the heart which alone is perfect eloquence.

The benefits of touri ***

It is exciting to visit different places. As you trel, you will see beautiful sceneries typical of the region. Besides, you can meet and make friends with people of different colors and races. Finally, you can get to know the customs and living habits of the local people. Today people are so fond of trelling that touri *** has bee one of the faster growing industries in most countries.

The main reason why people trel is, perhaps, for pleasure. For example, hing worked hard throughout the weekdays, people will find a widened trip to the nearby mountains or beaches a real relaxation. For another example, spending an annual holiday trelling abroad is an especially satisfying experience for those who do not he much of an opportunity to be away from their homelands. When people return from their trel, they will generally feel fresh and energetic, ready to work harder.

Trelling is also one of the best means for learning. You may he read or heard about something but you can never get an accurate picture of it until you see it for yourself. Seeing is believing. Furthermore, if you are a careful observer, you can learn much during your trel about the geography, biology, and history of the places you visit. No matter how well educated you are, there is always a lot for you to learn through trelling. The knowledge acquired from trel, as you will he found in your life, is no less valuable than that from any influential reference book

Trel Alone

I think there is no one would say “no” to trel. People love trel, for it can make them relax and widen their vision. Some people like to trel with friends, because they want to share the pleasure of treling, and they think the journey will be much easier for they can take care of each other. While some people like to trel alone, they can go anywhere in anytime. They don’t he to care about what the partner’s idea. In my opinion, I’m much preferred to trel with friends, but I always he an urge to trel alone.

Firstly, I was told that trel alone can help people to grow up quickly, and that’s what I really need. If you trel alone, you he to do everything by yourself in the journey, for instance, to buy a ticket, to book hotel, and ask directions. That maybe just a *** all case for extrovert, but for introvert, like me, it’s really a big challenge. I remember the first time I go to trel with friends and my little brother, they did everything, and I just follow and had fun. I even too shame to check into a hotel, and my little brother did it for me. I was humiliated for that. So, trel alone could force introvert to do the things that you don’t dare to do. It could help you to build an outgoing personality. For extrovert, trel alone could enhance your ability to handle emergence case.

Secondly, trel alone gives you peace of mind. Image that, you walking alone in the beach, there are no sounds of human beings, just burst of sound wes. You close your eyes, enjoy the moment, you will feel peace.

In short, trel alone could be loneliness and dangerous, especially for girls, but it’s worth hing a try for the beautiful scene in the journey, it seems like all the things are just exist for you.

Liberty is order.Liberty is strength. Look round the world, and admire, as you must, the instructive spectacle. You will see that liberty not only is power and order, but that it is power and order predominant and invincible - that it derides all other sources of strength. And shall the preposterous imagination be fostered, that men bred in liberty - the first of humankind who asserted the glorious distinction of formingfor themselves their social pact - can be condemned to silence upon their rights? Is it to be conceivedthat men who he enjoyed, for such a length of days, the light and hiness of freedom, can be restrained, and shut up again in the gloom of ignorance and degradation? As well, sir, might you try, by a miserable dam, to shut up theflowing of a rapid river! The rolling and impetuous tide would burst through every impediment that man mightthrow in its way; and the only consequence of the impotent attempt would be, that, hing collected new forceby its temporary suspension, enforcing itself through new channels, it wouldspread devastation and ruin on every side. The progress of liberty is like the progress of the stream. Kept within its bounds, it is sure to fertilize the country through which it runs; but no power can arrest itin its passage; and short sighted, as well as wicked, must be the heart of the projector that would striveto divert its course.

Over the phone his mother told him, "Mr. Belser died last night. The funeral is Wednesday."

Memories flashed through his mind like an old newsreel.

 "Jack, did you hear me?"

"Oh sorry, Mom. Yes, I heard you. It's been so long since I thought of him." Jack said.

"Well, he didn't forget you. Every time I saw him he'd ask how you were doing. He'd reminisce about the many days you spent with him," Mom told him. ?

"He spent a lot of time teaching me things he thought were important? Mom, I'll be there for the funeral," Jack said. ?

Jack kept his word and attended Mr. Belser's funeral.

The night before he returned home Jack and his Mom went to see Mr. Belser's old house one more time.

Standing in the doorway Jack paused for a moment. It was like crossing over into another dimension, a leap through space and time. Every step held memories. Every picture, every piece of furniture...Jack stopped suddenly.

"What's wrong, Jack?" his Mom asked.

"The box is gone," he said.

?他说。

 "What box?" Mom asked.

"There was a small gold box that he kept locked on top of his desk. I must he asked him a thousand times what was inside. All he'd ever tell me was, 'The thing I value most.' Now I'll never know what was so valuable to him," Jack said.

It had been about two weeks since Mr. Belser died. One day Jack discovered a parcel list in his mailbox.

Early the next day Jack retrieved the package. The handwriting was difficult to read, but the return address caught his attention. Mr. Harold Belser," it read.

Jack tore it open. There inside was the gold box and an envelope. Jack's hands shook as he read the note inside.

"Upon my death please forward this box to Jack Bennett. It's the thing I value most in my life." His heart raced as tears filled his eyes. Jack carefully unlocked the box. There inside he found a beautiful gold pocket watch.

He opened the cover. Inside he found these words engred: "Jack, Thanks for your time! ? Harold Belser."

"The thing he valued most...was...my time."

Jack held the watch for a few minutes, then called his office and cleared his ointments for the next two days?he needed some time to spend with his wife and son.

2. A Chip on Your Shoulder

Every week at this time we tell the story of words and expressions used in American English. Some of them are old. Some are new. Together, they form the living speech of the American people.

Some popular expressions are a mystery. No one is sure how they developed. One of these is the expression, carry a chip on your shoulder. A person with a chip on his shoulder is a problem for anybody who must deal with him. He seems to be expecting trouble. Sometimes he seems to be saying, "I'm not hy about anything, but what are you going to do about it?"

A chip is a small piece of something, like a chip of wood. How did this chip get on a person's shoulder? Well, experts say the expression ears to he been first used in the United States more than one hundred years ago.

One writer believes that the expression might he come from an old saying. The saying warns against striking too high, or a chip might fall into your eye. That could be good advice. If you strike high up on a tree with an axe, the chip of wood that is cut off will fall into your eye. The saying becomes a warning about the dangers of attacking people who are in more important positions than you are.

Later, in the United States, some people would put a real chip on their shoulder as a test. They wanted to start a fight. They would wait for someone to be bre enough to try to hit it off.

The word chip ears in a number of special American expressions. Another is chip off the old block. This means that a child is exactly like a parent.

This expression goes back at least to the early six hundreds. The British writer of plays, George Colman, wrote these lines in seven sixty-two. "You'll find him his father's own son, I believe. A chip off the old block, I promise you!"

The word chip can also be used in a threatening way to someone who is suspected of wrongdoing. An investigator may say, "We're going to let the chips fall where they may." This means the investigation is going to be complete and honest. It is also a warning that no one will be protected from being found guilty.

Chips are often used in card games. They represent money. A poker player may, at any time, decide to lee the game. He will turn in his chips in exchange for money or cash.

This lead to another meaning. A person who finished or died was said to he cashed in his chips. Which is a way of saying it is time for me to finish this program.

3.What will matter?

Ready or not, some day it will all come to an end. There will be no more sunrises, no days, no hours or minutes. All the things you collected, whether treasured or forgotten, will pass to someone else.

Your wealth, fame and temporal power will shrivel to irrelevance. It will not matter what you owned or what you were owed.

Your grudges, resentments, frustrations, and jealousies will finally disear.

So, too, your hopes, ambitions, plans, and to-do lists will all expire.

The wins and losses that once seemed so important will fade away.

It won't matter where you came from, or on what side of the tracks you lived.

It won't matter whether you were beautiful or brilliant. Your gender, skin color, ethnicity will be irrelevant.

So what will matter? How will the value of your days be measured?

What will matter is not what you bought, but what you built; not what you got, but what you ge.

What will matter is not your success, but your significance.

What will matter is not what you learned, but what you taught.

What will matter is every act of integrity, compassion, courage and sacrifice that enriched, empowered or encouraged others to emulate your example.

What will matter is not your competence, but your character.

What will matter is not your memories, but the memories of those who loved you.

What will matter is how long you will be remembered, by whom and for what.

Living a life that matters doesn’ t hen by accident.

It s not a matter of circumstance but of choice.

The courage of life is often a less dramatic spectacle than the courage of a final moment; but it is no lessa magnificent mixture of triumph and tragedy. A man does what he must in spite of personal consequences,in spite of obstacles and dangers and pressures and that is the basis of all human morality.

To be courageous?requires no exceptional qualifications,no magic formula,no special combination of time, place and circumstance. It is an opportunity that sooner or later is presented to us all. Politics merely furnishes one arena which imposes special tests of courage. In whatever arena of life one may meet the challengeof courage, whatever may be the sacrifices he faces if he follows his conscience, the loss of his friends, his fortune, his contentment, even the esteem of his fellow men, each man must decide for himself the course he will follow. The stories of past courage can define that ingredient, they can teach, they can offer hope, they can provide inspiration. But they cannot supply courage itself. For this each man must look into his own soul.

To a large degree, the measure of our peace of mind is determined by how much we are ableto live in the present moment. Irrespective of what hened yesterday or last year, and whatmay or may not hen tomorrow, the present moment is where you are -- always!

Without question, many of us he mastered the neurotic art of spending much our livesworrying about a variety of things -- all at once. We allow past problems and future concernsto dominate our present moments,so much that we end up anxious, frustrated, depressed, and hopeless. On the flip side, we also postpone our gratification, our stated priorities, andour hiness, often convincing ourselves future will be better than today. Unfortunately, thesame mental dynamics that tell us to look toward the future will only repeat themselves sothat"someday "never actually arrives. John Lennon once said,"Life is what~ s hening whilewe"re busy making other plans. "When we"re busy making "other plans", our children are busygrowing up, the people we love are moving away and dying, our bodies are getting out ofshape, and our dreams are slipping away. In short, we miss out on life.

Many people live as if life were a dress rehearsal for some later date. It isn't. In fact, no onehas a guarantee that he or she will be here tomorrow. Now is the only time we he, and theonly time that we he any control over. When our attention is in the present moment, wepush fear from our minds. Fear is the concern over events that might hen in the future --we won't he enough money, our children will get into trouble, we will get old and die, whatever.

One word is too often profaned

 For me to profane it,

 One feeling too falsely distain'd

 For thee to distain it;

One hope is too like despair

 For prudence to smother,

And pity from thee more dear

 Than that from another.

I can not give what men call love:

 But wilt thou accept not

The worship the heart lifts above

 And the heens reject not,

And the desire of the moth for the star,

Of the nigth for the morrow

 The devotion to something afar

From the sphere of our sorrow.

 有一种希望太似绝望;
