A judge in a small city was hearing a drunk-driving case and the defendant, who had both a record and a reputation for driving under the influence, demanded a jury trial. It was nearly 4 p. m. and getting a jury would take time, so the judge called a recess and went out in the hall looking to impanel anyone ailable for jury duty. He found a dozen lawyers in the main lobby and told them that they were a jury.
The lawyers thought this would be a novel experience and so followed the judge back to the courtroom. The trial was over in duanwenw about 10 minutes and it was very clear that the defendant was guilty. The jury went into the jury-room, the judge started getting ready to go home, and everyone waited.
After nearly three hours, the judge was totally out of patience and sent the bailiff into the jury-room to see what was holding up the verdict. When the bailiff returned, the judge said, ?Well he they got a verdict yet
The bailiff shook his head and said, ?Verdict? Hell, they?re still doing nominating speeches for the foreman?s position!?

An old story goes that once there were four single men, leading very boring lives. none of them were married, or had lovers, or did anything exciting. they just sat around all day and played mahjong.
One day they played mahjong from 11 in the morning until 11 at night. during the game, no matter who won, the winning card was always the "four columns" card (the card shows four independent, parallel columns in two lines). even more of a coincidence, it was nov 11, or 11/11. in order to commemorate the day, they nicknamed it singles day.
Singles day was first celebrated at various universities in nanjing, capital city of jiangsu province during the 1990s. it got the name singles day because the date is comprised of four "ones". these college students he since graduated, and carried their university tradition into society. singles day is now a special day for all fashionable youths.
The main way to celebrate singles day is to he dinner with your single friends, but it's important that each person pay their own way to show their independence. people also hold "blind date" parties in an attempt to bid goodbye to their single lives.

Sushi has a very interesting origin that has lasted for centuries and continues to be a very popular food today. sushi is made with a combination of shellfish, cooked or raw fish, vegetables, and seasoned rice. although sushi is most commonly linked to the japanese heritage, it actually began in china during the 7th century.
At that time, any fish caught had to be preserved. the only method possible was by fermentation. raw fish was cleaned, filleted, and then pressed between layers of hey salt and usually weighted down with some type of stone. the fish would remain this way for weeks at which the stone would be removed and then replaced with some type of light cover. the fish would stay in the salt layers for a couple of months until the fermentation process was complete.
Over time, a discovery was made that by rolling the fish in rice that had been soaked in vinegar the fish was fermented in a matter of days rather than months. the rice was then tossed out and the fish eaten. however, with drought and a food shortage, people began consuming the rice as well as the fish and thus, sushi as we know it today was born.
However, in the 1800s, a famous chef by the name of yohei was planning a large dinner party. finding that he had not set out enough fish to serve his guests, he took a piece of fish from the freezer that had not been fermented and decided to take his chances in serving it. what he found was that frozen fish actually retained their flor and any bacterium was killed. from this discovery, yohei created two styles of sushi ?one called edo, and the second, osaka, for the city.
Sushi is usually consumed with hot green tea. gari (thin slices of vinegar pickled ginger root) is offered free and eaten between bites to freshen the palate. two kinds of sauces are usually ailable: one is soy sauce, which is poured on most kinds of sushi; the other is a thick sweet sauce used on eel. wasabe (hot, green japanese horseradish) can be added to make it spicier.
Sushi has taken the world by storm and today is a multi-billion dollar industry. the popularity of sushi continues to rise in that people are looking for healthy food that is quick and easy to make.
With such incredible popularity as well as the health benefits of eating sushi, it is likely that this food will continue to be a part of everyday life for many more centuries to come.

It was the late 70s and we thought him almost a god, my school friends Helen and Anne and I. An actor-director undergraduate, impossibly tall, dark and drop dead gorgeous, he co-hosted a party every summer for which all the guests had to dress in white. Everything he did was cool and desirable. Until, in the 80s, a killer disease from America swept through the beautiful people like a scythe, and left him a wasted skeleton in a hospital bed. Anne managed to visit him and I meant to, really I did. But I couldn't quite believe there wasn't plenty of time. You see he seemed incapable, but incapable, of doing anything disagreeable. We need to be "more Christian to one another" over AIDS, Elton John said yesterday. An interesting phrase, given Mr John's introduction to this once devastating scourge.
In 1985 he first read about and then met a bre young haemophiliac, Ryan White. When a journalist revealed that Ryan was dying of AIDS, not only was he banned from school and a judicial restraining order put on him to the cheers of neighbours, but his own church required him to sit in a separate pew, and on Easter Day no one in the congregation would shake his hand as a sign of peace. If this is the behiour of the church, why should we want to be more "Christian" towards one another? We hardly he an impeccable record, do we? Once when we had reached a very low ebb as a family, I asked my husband, in despair, "Why should we go on believing, when God doesn't answer prayer and Christians can behe worse than anybody?" All he said in reply was this. "Look at the character of Jesus. Who else do you think He could he been?" Not "Christian" theology. Far less the behiour of "Christian" sinners like ourselves. But the character of Christ.
My godmother ge me a Bible, in red tooled leather, which I had throughout my childhood and he still. At that moment I thought of its garish, dated children's pictures, a shepherd with long hair and a lamb across His shoulders. Who else could He he been? It's true, He could be angry. He was capable of condemning. He even talked of Judgement. But it's not for this that we remember Him. We remember a Man who loved a worker for indecently wiping His feet with her loose hair, who publicly befriended a fraudster worse than any recently discredited banker, who cured those whose illnesses made them even more untouchable than Ryan, ostracised by his society. Elton John's book is provocatively entitled, Love is the Cure. Not medicine, or science, or technology, it is love for which this God is known above all, extending an invitation into His kingdom to a terrorist hanging by His side. As Elton John said, Jesus, like Ryan who followed Him, "loved and forge unconditionally and died for the sake of others." A death even more disagreeable than my friend's all those years ago.

It is not difficult to imagine a world short of ambition. It would probably be a kinder world: with out demands, without abrasions, without disointments. People would he time for reflection. Such work as they did would not be for themselves but for the collectivity. Competition would never enter in. conflict would be eliminated, tension become a thing of the past. The stress of creation would be at an end. Art would no longer be troubling, but purely celebratory in its functions. Longevity would be increased, for fewer people would die of heart attack or stroke caused by tumultuous endeor. Anxiety would be extinct. Time would stretch on and on, with ambition long departed from the human heart.
Ah, how unrelieved boring life would be!
There is a strong view that holds that success is a myth, and ambition therefore a sham. Does this mean that success does not really exist? That achievement is at bottom empty? That the efforts of men and women are of no significance alongside the force of movements and events now not all success, obviously, is worth esteeming, nor all ambition worth cultivating. Which are and which are not is something one soon enough learns on one’s own. But even the most cynical secretly admit that success exists; that achievement counts for a great deal; and that the true myth is that the actions of men and women are useless. To believe otherwise is to take on a point of view that is likely to be deranging. It is, in its implications, to remove all motives for competence, interest in attainment, and regard for posterity.
We do not choose to be born. We do not choose our parents. We do not choose our historical epoch, the country of our birth, or the immediate circumstances of our upbringing. We do not, most of us, choose to die; nor do we choose the time or conditions of our death. But within all this realm of choicelessness, we do choose how we shall live: courageously or in cowardice, honorably or dishonorably, with purpose or in drift. We decide what is important and what is trivial in life. We decide that what makes us significant is either what we do or what we refuse to do. But no matter how indifferent the universe may be to our choices and decisions, these choices and decisions are ours to make. We decide. We choose. And as we decide and choose, so are our lives formed. In the end, forming our own destiny is what ambition is about.

Dad
"It's never too late to he a hy childhood," some bumper-sticker author said. I think it is never too late to need Dad.
When we're little, Daddy is in charge of the world, as we know it. Yes, I know we he a President, some countries he kings or prime ministers, and there's always God, but they are really not in charge of the world.
Dad knows everything, he can do anything, he is always right, he can always fix things. He's almost like God.
"Hey, Daddy! Where is Helsinki?" My father always replied, "If you put things away where they belong, you would know where they are." "Hey, Daddy! I really need to know about Helsinki." "OK; let's get the encyclopedia."
"Hey, Dad! Can I use the car for a date tonight?" "Yeah. Be home before midnight." Arriving home at 2:30 a.m., Dad was up waiting. We don't understand about love and anger when we're kids. Dads yell and shout, and we don't realize it is because they care; we think it is because they he to be tough. Not this time. He said, "Thank God you're safe. Go to bed; we'll talk about this in the morning."
"Hey, Dad! I got into trouble at school today. I didn't really do anything wrong. That stupid teacher won't listen to me." "I'll listen. What hened?....Is that really what hened?" Next day, Dad is at my school, talking with my teacher, fixing the misunderstanding. He has such power! I can always count on Dad.
When Daddy starts to get old (about the same time as I am 13 years old), he gets really stupid, but he is still in charge of the world. "Hey, Daddy! What's this with boys? Do you know why they are so weird? Were you like this when you were a boy?" Dad pontificates for awhile on the nature of the -age human animal and I sort of get the hint that even though he is old (35), he knows about both boys and girls. Some dads even know about such matters as safe and child support.
Regardless of what they know (or don't know), they mostly care, and can be counted on to be on your side. When you're a kid, Dads are good for playing basketball in the driveway;Daddies are good audiences for dance recitals.
If we get our foot caught in a bear trap, Dad will free the foot, bind it, and take us to the doctor. Dad doesn't panic; he, being Dad, just automatically knows what to do, and does it.He buries our non-human family members; he fixes the things we break. The small things Dad does for us make us feel valuable and important.
Daddy lectures and pontificates; he is the ultimate authority on everything. He is so totally boring - I hope he doesn't act like such a jerk in front of my friends. If he talks too much, they also will know how stupid he is. Of course, even though he is (during some periods of my life) an utterly stupid nerd, he is not fair game for criticism from others. He is still the best dad there is...
"Hey, Dad! How are you going to vote?" "Not me. I think he's a crook." So argument ensues...Dad is still stupid, but getting a little smarter, and we can listen to him without acknowledging his wisdom.
"Hey, Daddy! Wanna hold the baby for awhile?" Daddy assures his "princess" that her baby is truly a marvel, and "Princess" feels warm and reassured.
"Hey,Dad!Do you he fifty bucks I could borrow?"He does.Even if he doesn't,he will find it or go without something so he will he it.Then he feels embarrassed when we pay him back, and he says,"Naw;you don't he to pay it,"but we do because it is important to do the right thing. Dad taught us that.
Whether Dad is a brain surgeon or a gandy dancer, Dad is always there for us. The back-up unit in case of temporary failure. Even when Dad is 80 and maybe forgets sometimes or maybe has little "accidents," he is still in charge of my world. Even when Daddy needs for us to take care of him, he is still Daddy who knows all and who can do everything.
Whether Dad is a rocket scientist or a janitor, he sweat bullets to take care of us, to teach us what is right, and to make sure we had some fun. Dad taught us the true meaning of respect and how to earn it. No matter what career choice we make, Dad will be proud of us. He will do his best to make sure we he the education and/or training we need in order to be able to take care of ourselves and our burgeoning families.
Eventually, Dad goes on, as all living creatures do. It is a loss that is unutterably cruel. It is frightening to envision life without Dad. Even Dads need Dads. The fact that one is 50 or so years old does nothing to diminish the need for Dad.
We can recall sitting in the bleachers at the ball game with Dad - a bonding thing that gruffly says "I love you." Upon achieving majority, we could even he a beer with Dad. We can recall being walloped by Dad and know that it was an act of love. We cherish the time spent with Dad while he taught us the necessary maintenance tasks associated with car ownership. We still capture the feeling that came over us when we saw Dad's face out there in the audience, and he was proud, and he and Mom knew they had created something very special when they made us.
Dad presides over all festive events. "How is today different from other days?" Of course he knows, and knows how to explain; it is he who takes charge and knows how to do everything;he is the leader, and he is in charge of our world. The Captain of the ocean sea.
Father's Day is kind of an embarrassment to Dad - he is accustomed to being the provider;not the recipient. We honor Dad for being in charge of the world, but Dad somehow is a bit diffident about being the honoree on Father's Day.
Dads don't really lee us when they go.Their spirits inhabit our psyche, and stay with us always.Fortunately, the parting is usually gradual, and sometimes, as when they need our care,we he an opportunity to show our gratitude and our love directly to him.Being aware that it will hen"some day"does not really anesthetize us against the actuality of the event.Emotions cannot be intellectualized, and pain is pain. It is okay to feel pain - to hurt. It is okay to heal, which we always do. It is also okay to become the Dad who knows everything, can do everything, and who is in charge of the world.

Love of a partner requires long-term commitment and wisdom and above all, work from both partners to nourish and nurture that love into a living growing thing. Without nourishment, all things die, even love.
Do not easily discard love, for the day may come when love, in turn, discards you. Place a high value in this the most precious of life's joys. Some never find this treasure, many find and lose it through no fault of their own. Some discard it lightly as if it were of little value and easily replaced. The ability to love and be loved is the mosrt precious of girfts given to man, and as such should be hightly treasured.

Too many people think of hiness as the ultimate goal of life. But, if you?re waiting for hiness to arrive then it?s likely that it never will!
You?re always wanting something more, always looking forward to a time when you?ll be ?hy?. And, if you fall into this trap, you?ll never reach that goal. Hiness should not be your life?s goal, it should be your life! The only time to be hy is right now! It?s state of mind, not a set of accomplishments or the accumulation of material things. You must accept that life will always he challenges and things will not always go your way.
Instead of feeling disointed when things don?t work out the way you?d hoped, feel grateful for the experience. Instead of dreaming of a brighter, hier, richer tomorrow, make today as wonderful as you can.
Hiness is a conscious decision and that I can make it right now. Thinking of the future and hing aspirations is essential to leading a hy and fulfilled life. The trick is not to let thoughts of the future overshadow your enjoyment of the present and the reciation of the things and people you he in your life right now!
There is no way to hiness: hiness is the way!
Stop waiting for hiness to arrive and simply decide to be hy! It?s not some great goal or destination, it?s a journey and a way of life.
A woman baked chapatti for members of her family and an extra one for a hungry passerby. She kept the extra chapatti on the window sill. Every day, a hunchback came and took away the chapatti. Instead of expressing gratitude, he muttered the following words as he went his way: ?The evil you do remains with you: The good you do, comes back to you!?
The woman felt irritated. ?Not a word of gratitude,? she said to herself Everyday this hunchback utters this jingle! What does he mean? One day, she decided to do away with him. She added poison to the chapatti she prepared for him!
As she was about to keep it on the window sill, her hands trembled. ?What is this I am doing? she said. Immediately, she threw the chapatti into the fire, prepared another one. As usual, the hunchback came, picked up the chapatti and muttered the words: ?The evil you do, remains with you: The good you do, comes back to you!?
Every day, as the woman placed the chapatti on the window sill, she offered a prayer for her son who had gone to a distant place to seek his fortune.
That evening, there was a knock on the door. As she opened it, she was surprised to find her son standing in the doorway. He was hungry and weak. As he saw his mother, he said, ?Mom, it?s a miracle I?m here. While I was but a mile away, I was so famished that I collapsed. I would he died, but just then an old hunchback passed by. He was kind enough to give me a whole chapatti. He said, ?Your need is greater than mine!?
She remembered the poisoned chapatti that she had made that morning. Had she not burnt it in the fire, it would he been eaten by her own son!
It was then that she realized the significance of the words: ?The evil you do remains with you: The good you do, comes back to you!? Do good and don?t ever stop doing good, even if it is not reciated at that time.
Mom, I Got My Attitude From You, And That?s Not A Bad Thing!
Dear Mom,
The big question alled and surprised parents often ask their child after a confrontational or revelatory moment is, "Where did you get this attitude from?" I know you hate to admit it, but I get much of my determined and strong-willed nature from you.
Mom, I know it?s hard dealing with the age angst and the ever-changing moods that come with raising a child. But you should also marvel at the fact that I?ve made it this far, that I?m healthy and hy.
When I was small, I would attend barbecues and family events and wander away from my parents. It wouldn?t be long before someone would stop me to ask whether I was my mother?s daughter.
"Your mom is Melissa," they?d say, a warm smile on their faces. "Is that right?" I would nod, I assume, parents feel when their child talks back or defies them, I was alled at this statement. To me, I acted nothing like you, Mom.
No one says, "I know you?re Melissa?s daughter because of your eyes and nose" it?s the character traits that seal the deal. Dry wit, intelligence, and yes, maybe a little bit of attitude?these are the things I am grateful I he received from you. There?s nothing wrong with hing attitude.
。
Like for most black individuals, attitude is what defines you and me, and it?s what keeps us from being mentally oppressed and defeated. Attitude is a non-violent form of protection and confrontation -- where would we be in the world without this tool? Surely not where we are.
Mom, when people ask me where I get my attitude from, I tell them: you. And when they ask me where I got my drive, my work ethic, my good hair, and my sense of humor, I say you as well. I will always say this.
When I?m asked why I am the way I am -- why I refuse to allow others to hurt me with their words or actions, why I think and speak about things openly and without fear?I?ll tell them it's because of you.
I?ll complain to you about the arguments between us that lee me wondering about how God made us so much alike that we hardly even noticed.
But I?ll tell them about you.
Love,

I do not know who wrote those words, but I he always liked them as a reminder that the future can be anything we want to make it. We can take the mysterious, hazy future and carve out of it anything that we can imagine, just as a sculptor carves a statue from a shapeless stone.
We are all in the position of the farmer. If we plant a good seed, we reap a good harvest. If our seed is poor and full of weeds, we reap a useless crop. If we plant nothing at all, we harvest nothing at all.
I want the future to be better than the past. I don't want it contaminated by the mistakes and errors with which history is filled. We should all be concerned about the future because that is where we will spend the remainder of our lives.
The past is gone and static. Nothing we can do will change it. The future is before us and dynamic. Everything we do will affect it. Each day brings with it new frontiers, in our homes and in our business, if we only recognize them. We are just at the beginning of the progress in every field of human endeor.

Fifty-percent Expectation
I believe in the "50-percent theory". Half the time things are better than normal; the other half, they are worse. I believe life is a pendulum swing. It takes time and experience to understand what normal is, and that gives me the perspective to deal with the surprises of the future.
Let's benchmark the parameters: Yes, I will die. I've dealt with the deaths of both parents, a best friend, a beloved boss and cherished pets. Some of these deaths he been violent, before my eyes, or slow and agonizing. Bad stuff, and it belongs at the bottom of the scale.
Then there are those high points: romance and marriage to the right person; hing a child and doing those Dad things like ing my son's baseball team, paddling around the creek in the boat while he's swimming with the dogs, discovering his compassion so deep it manifests even in his kindness to snails, his imagination so vivid he builds a spaceship from a scattered pile of Legos.
But there is a vast meadow of life in the middle, where the bad and the good flip-flop acrobatically. This is what convinces me to believe in the 50-percent theory.
One spring I planted corn too early in a bottomland so flood-prone that neighbors laughed. I felt chagrined at the wasted effort. Summer turned brutal-- the worst heat we and drought in my lifetime. The air-conditioner died, the well went dry, the marriage ended, the job lost, the money gone. I was living lyrics from a country tune -- music I loathed. Only a surging Kansas CityRoyals team, bound for their first World Series, buoyed my spirits.
Looking back on that horrible summer, I soon understood that all succeeding good things merely offset the bad. Worse than normal wouldn't last long. I am owed and sor the halcyon times. They reinvigorate me for the next nasty surprise and offer assurance that I can thrive. The 50 percent theory even helps me see hope beyond my Royals' recent slump, a field of struggling rookies sown so that some year soon we can reap an October harvest.
Oh, yeah, the corn crop? For that one blistering summer, the ground moisture was just right, planting early allowed pollination before heat, withered the tops, and the lack of rain spared the standing corn from floods. That winter my crib overflowed with corn -- fat, healthy three-to-a-stalk ears filled with kernels from heel to tip -- while my neighbors' fields yielded only brown, empty husks.
Although plantings past may he fallen below the 50-percent expectation, and they probably will again in the future, I am still sustained by the crop that flourishes during the drought.
